Strength training for older adults is an important, make that a necessary, part of your workout program. It’s more important for older adults than any other age group.
As we age we tend to be less active, which reduces muscle fiber, which causes us to be less active. It’s a vicious cycle that causes a host of other problems like less endurance and difficulty performing (or loss of ability to perform) activities of daily living. It also increases your likelihood of falling, which brings about another host of problems that causes you to live out your life devoid of activity and quality of life.
Weight training for older adults is a unique program that’s not at all about using lighter weights. In fact, every person who begins a new weight training program, taught by a professionally trained senior fitness instructor and based on each person’s unique abilities, will increase their strength and WILL feel better by making life easier and more active and satisfying.
Ron Dorr is a Certified Senior Fitness Instructor. His 45-minute, twice-weekly Joint Friendly Strength Training class is designed to teach you how to lift safely and improve your quality of life almost immediately.
